Web music service Pressplay in deal with Zomba

Online subscription music service Pressplay said Monday it signed a deal to distribute music from independent label Zomba Recording Corp., whose actsinclude Britney Spears, ‘NSYNC. the Backstreet Boys, R. Kelly and “Weird” Al Yankovic.

Los Angeles- and New York-based Pressplay is a joint venture of Sony Music Entertainment, a unit of Sony Corp. and Universal Music Group, a unit of Vivendi Universal.

Pressplay also distributes music from EMI Group and some small labels.

As with Pressplay’s other deals, the Zomba contract is not exclusive, Pressplay said. Zomba can distribute its songs on competing online music services.

Pressplay’s services are distributed through a number of different Web sites, including Vivendi’s MP3.com and Roxio.

Besides Zomba’s Jive, Silvertone and Volcano labels, the deal also includes Gospel label Verity and Christian music company the Provident Music Group.

Pressplay was launched in December. It is one of several subscription services that have emerged in the past few months aiming to capitalize on the demand for music on the Web demonstrated by Napster Inc. before its site was idled after a copyright infringement lawsuit.
