Tour Diary #2: Stairmageddon

August 14th — The Warehouse | La Crosse, WI

I love the way the stars never change. Ever since I was a kid I’ve always had my head up in awe at the pinpricks of light from miles and miles away. It ironically keeps me grounded. When I first started dreaming about playing in a band and touring I was in my bedroom staring at an atmosphere of possibilities, and now as my head peeks from under the blanket in the back bench of our van I catch the same stars I grew up with, and that is a blessing I hope everyone gets the chance to experience.

The Warehouse in La Crosse, WI is infamous for many reasons; one of the most daunting is their stairs. Three flights of steep climb set the tone for the show. If you’re not ready to work, you shouldn’t be playing here. With the luck we have had finding tours, we have played the five songs from ISMFWT a wonderful amount of times, which results in having to reinvent the lyrics for myself, so that I can feel every word to my bones. But tonight things changed; for the first time we played a new song live, and it felt great to be in the moment, it felt good to have honest, in-the-moment emotion.

It’s a real pleasure to do what I get to do. I’m laying in the back of my van while Death Cab For Cutie warms my mind with nostalgia from the summer of ’08, and again, I’m watching the stars, and thinking what will come next while the sweat wicks away with cool, late-summer air. I am the luckiest man alive, and in this moment I’m aware, and in this moment things are good.

Until tomorrow.
