Sugar Ray May Work With Neptunes, Looking To Change Sound

Sugar Ray is back in the studio working on what will become the band’s fifth album for Atlantic Records. Frontman Mark McGrath is pleased with the progress and the prospects of some potential developments, from working with the group’s original producer to hooking up with one of the hottest production teams in music right now:

McGrath said, “It’s coming along, man. A lot of creative turmoil involved, you know, which is great, because if we don’t find, punch each other, then it’s not going to be a great record. So there’s plenty of brawls happening, so it should be a great record. David Kahne’s producing the record, yeah, so we’re going back to the hearth there and we’re looking forward, there’s, you know, I don’t want to jump the gun, but it looks, we met with Pharrell from the Neptunes, and it’s, there are some interesting possibilities happening so we’re excited about it, yeah.”

McGrath also said to not necessarily expect the same Sugar Ray of previous hits such as “Every Morning” and “Someday.”

“It’s funny, you wait your whole life to get a sound and now the sound’s like ‘Wow, we’ve got to do something else,'” he says. “I think Madonna set the bar pretty high for changing yourself, staying current. And we’re sort of in that position now. We’re gonna pull the trigger and do something different this time.”
