Singer Smith Teased by 'Default'

Maybe it’s an honor to be considered a “cute rock star” in the teen magazines, but for new rock band Default, it’s a license to tease.

Singer Dallas Smith has been noted for his looks by magazines like “Teen Beat.” Bassist Dave Benedict said when the other three members of the Canadian-based band found out, they all used the hockey slogan: “Game On!”

“We all think it’s a pretty funny,” Benedict told The Associated Press. “He’s Dallas. He’s our buddy. We hang out with him every day. It’s just funny when you see your friend in there under ‘Hot Boys,’ 97 percent hottie rating right up there with Brad Pitt. Oh man, give me a break! That’s hilarious.”

Benedict says Smith isn’t their singer because he gets “cute alerts” in teen magazines.

“He’s a good-lookin’ dude, but it’s not like he made it on his looks,” Benedict said. “He made it because he’s an amazing singer. He’s great live in the studio. He nails his parts, like first takes. His pitch is perfect. Anybody that comes out to see him they’re just like, ‘Man, that kid’s got a powerful, amazing voice.'”

Benedict says the band has worked hard to get where they are. In fact, Smith was working as a sheet metal cutter before his music career took off.

“It’s hard to say it’s an overnight success,” he said. “It happened really fast once the four of us got together because all of sudden, we just hit a chemistry. And once that happened, it really blossomed fast and things happened real fast. But as far as overnight success, I wouldn’t call it that.”

Default saw their song “Wasting My Time” hit the Top 5 on multiple rock charts, and their debut album “The Fallout” quickly reach gold status in both the United States and Canada.

Default’s latest single is the edgy, riff-heavy “Deny.” The song is accompanied by an even edgier video directed by Noble Jones. The clip features Laila Ali, a female boxer and daughter of boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
