Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, and the Backstreet Boys are among the acts that were nominated for the 28th annual People’s Choice Awards. The nominations, which were announced Tuesday (November 27), cover 18 categories in television, film, and music, and were determined by a Gallup Poll of more than 200 million Americans.
Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, and George Strait earned nods for favorite male musical performer, while McGraw’s wife Faith Hill, Lopez, and Spears were nominated for favorite female musical performer. Lopez will also vie for favorite actress against Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock. The favorite musical group or band nominees include *NSYNC, the Backstreet Boys, and the Dixie Chicks.
Interestingly, Reba McEntire was nominated for her acting and not her singing this year. She landed a nod for favorite female performer in a new television series for her role in the WB sitcom Reba. McEntire, a relative newcomer to the television category, has won eight awards in the music category over the years. Most recently, she won for favorite female musical performer at the 24th annual People’s Choice Awards in 1998.
Last year’s music category winners all received nominations this year. In 2000, Brooks won favorite male musical performer, Hill won favorite female musical performer, and *NSYNC won favorite musical group or band. Kevin James (The King of Queens) will host the People’s Choice Awards ceremony live on CBS on January 13.
