Who stole Outkast’s Scooby Snacks? That’s the premise of the video for “Land of a Million Drums,” the hip-hop duo’s contribution to, and the first single from, the upcoming “Scooby-Doo” soundtrack. Outkast filmed the clip last week in Los Angeles with director Bryan Barber (Lil’ Bow Wow, Jagged Edge) and actor Matthew Lillard, whose Shaggy is caught snatching up the tasty treats. But wait! In a classic “Scooby-Doo” ending, a mask is pulled up revealing it’s not really Shaggy, but guest rapper Sleepy Brown.
The “Land of a Million Drums” video, which also features the track’s other guest MC, Killer Mike, follows Outkast and crew in their hot rods (Big Boi drives the Outkast-customized Mystery Machine) from a classic ’50s diner to a slammin’ house party – a haunted house party.
“It’s the new take on ‘Thriller,’ ” Lillard said during a break on the set. “It’s very scary.”
“Land of a Million Drums” is a classic Outkast cut with some additional percussion, hence the title.
“[The ‘Scooby-Doo’ soundtrack supervisors] contacted us and said, ‘We want y’all to be a part of the project, so come check out the film to see if you see a part where a song would fit the scene,’ ” Dre explained. “And we had a couple songs we were working on at the time, and we tried to pick which song would be good for the movie, and ‘Land of a Million Drums’ came to mind.”
Other artists on the soundtrack include Lil’ Romeo and Master P, Uncle Kracker and Busta Rhymes, Kylie Minogue, Shaggy, and Sugar Ray (see ” ‘Scooby-Doo’ Soundtrack To Feature Lil’ Romeo, Kylie, Shaggy (Zoinks!)”).
Outkast, who will spend the summer on the reincarnated Smokin’ Grooves tour, said they’re working on a movie of their own, which they’re writing with Barber.
“It’s too early right now to get in-depth about it, but it should be hitting the big screens beginning of next year,” Dre said. “Look out for it.”
Dre and Big Boi are also planning to release an Outkast comic book and a new album at the same time as the film. The album may include each of them recording solo.
“It’s not gonna sound the same at all from what you’ve heard before,” Dre said.
Added Boi, “It’s still the Outkast sound, but it’s different realms of it. It’s jammin’.”
