'Glitter' Release Date Delayed

Nearly two weeks after Mariah Carey’s emotional and physical breakdown, the studio releasing her new movie has announced that the release date has been pushed back to next month.

“Glitter,” which stars Carey as an aspiring pop singer, was to open Aug. 31. But 20th Century Fox said Monday it would now open Sept. 21.

Studios delay release dates regularly. A Fox spokesperson did not immediately return a call seeking details on why the film’s release was delayed. Carey had canceled her publicity tour for the film, along with other public appearances.

Her new album, also titled “Glitter,” was scheduled for release Aug. 21; it is unclear if its release will be delayed to coincide with the movie’s opening. A publicist for the soundtrack did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

The 31-year-old Grammy winner checked herself into a hospital on July 25 after suffering “an emotional and physical breakdown,” according to her spokeswoman, Cindi Berger. Berger said Carey had been working too hard and getting too little sleep working on “Glitter,” the soundtrack and another film, “Wise Girls,” due out next year.

On Monday, Berger told The Associated Press that Carey’s condition was unchanged. Carey is under psychiatric care at an undisclosed facility.

“Glitter” marks Carey’s first starring role. She also is one of its producers.
