The filming of Eminem ‘s movie 8 Mile wrapped Friday (January 11) in Detroit. The movie, now in the editing stages, is scheduled for a late summer release, and also includes appearances from Kim Basinger, Mekhi Phifer, Xzibit, Eugene Byrd, and Anthony Mackie, who played Tupac in the off-Broadway play Against The Wind.
Director Curtis Hanson, who also directed L.A. Confidential, explains the significance of the movie’s title on Eminem’s Shady Records website. “The people in Detroit know 8 Mile as the city limit, a border, a boundary. But there is a dividing line that separates each of us from where we want to be and who we want to be. We all have our own 8 Mile.”
The controversial rapper is also expected to issue a soundtrack for the film, as well as a solo album sometime this year. Despite Eminem’s profuse public squabbling with his mother, he expresses apologetic lyrics about their relationship during the movie’s trailer, rapping, “Mama, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
Eminem’s 2000 solo album, The Marshall Mathers LP, has been certified eight times platinum.
