Rise Rock n’ Shine Presents: Remember What Matters with “Burnt Orange” by Real Talk

“Burnt Orange” is a phenomenal, heart-felt song. It also kind of feels like a knife in the gut and a shoulder to cry on at the same time. That’s a little confusing, I know, but we’ll get there.

The track introduces us to Real Talk’s upcoming album. “‘Burnt Orange’ was the first song we wrote for the EP and felt like a natural fit for a lead single,” guitarist Steve Cormier explains. They wrapped up recording in March and the collection is slated to be something of a rebirth for the New England band. With vocalist Dylan Slick in tow and a deal with Anchor Eighty Four Records, they’re entering all new territory in 2021.

But back to the song in question. “Burnt Orange” greets you with all the facets of a modern pop punk jam. “When Dylan came to us with the melody, we knew it had to make the record.” A subdued intro lets the lyrics shine before the band breaks into full gear—and it’s just enough time to let you know this is a song about loss.

“Burnt Orange is a reminder to appreciate all the time spent with loved ones,” Steve says as he tackles the lyrical matter of the tune. As Dyan wishes for more phone calls, reminisces on video game nights, and hopes to “wake up” from the nightmare that is losing someone young, you’ll find those knives I was talking about earlier.

That kind of loss is almost impossible to express. It’s much easier to relate it to a quote… or a song. Therefore “Burnt Orange” is a shoulder to cry on in the most literal of terms (besides being an actual, y’know, shoulder). When you can’t find words to describe the turmoil in your heart, singing along to this song is sure to help you get it all out.

And if you don’t relate in the cry-your-eyeliner-off way that I do? There’s still a lot to learn from it. “It’s easy to get wrapped up in our busy lives, but things can change overnight,” the guitarist continues. We live in a fast world so it’s more important than ever to keep your perspective straight. You’ll never regret spending an extra day (or even second) with a loved one. “Check in often and remind your friends and family you love them.”

The band builds bonds by sharing their pain on “Burnt Orange”. If this is just the first chapter in a new Real Talk book, we can’t wait to see what’s coming next… just let us know if we should pick up some more tissues first, ‘kay?

Fun facts about Real Talk + “Burnt Orange”:

  • Real Talk is singer, Dylan Slick’s first band ever. He joined the band just a little over a year ago.
  • Bassist Pat Nadeau is the one that wrote the main riff for “Burnt Orange”
  • Everyone in the band is straight edge except for Stephen.
  • The band shot 4 videos in two days. We had only planned on shooting two, but Alex Zarek (videographer) had flown into Burlington from Chicago and we crammed to make the most of our time. We had no idea where we were even going to shoot the last two and ended up getting great locations/shots at the last second.
