Purple

Overview

While supporting the indie music scene at The Underground Music Showcase 2014 (an annual weekend-long music event in Denver), I stumbled upon one of the best live bands I’ve seen in years. This young band played a claustrophobic dive bar with more energy, style, and charisma than anything I had seen all weekend. As I watched this blinding rock n’ roll supernova explode, I needed answers and I needed them now. But, the piercing vocals, gut wrenching guitar solos, and skull rattling bass made it impossible to ask anyone nearby the curtail questions. What is this awesomeness? Where did it come from? Is this real life?

A swirl of grunge, indie, hard-rock, and beach punk—a cocktail almost more intoxicating than the local IPA pints I chugged earlier that night.

I later found out these Rock Gods are called Purple, a three piece power punch from Beaumont, Texas. They haven’t done very much touring, but they’ve rocked SXSW, been on a small US tour, and they had a short stint in the UK. Their sound is a swirl of grunge, indie, hard-rock, and beach punk—a cocktail almost more intoxicating than the local IPA pints I chugged earlier that night. Be sure to listen to the tuneful “Wallflower” and smile-inducing “Beach Buddy” off their debut album 409. Also be sure to watch the hilarious music video for their first single, “Target”. Oh yeah, I should mention that Purple have a female drummer/vocalist. That’s just plain awesome on a million and one levels.

“[Purple is] pretty badass! gives me a mix vibe of Joan Jett and The Go-Gos which rules.”
– Mike Fishkin, Gone Fishkin show host

“The Texan trio have delivered an album designed to be listened to at full volume, ’til your speakers are shaking and you can’t hear yourself think—because this is a complete party from start to finish, and it does a better job of getting you out of your head than any shot of alcohol ever could.”
– Alex Bear, idobi staff writer

“They’re catchy, fun and have the old-school punk attitude about them…I can definitely dig it. I bet their live shows are fun.”
– Alyson Stokes, idobi staff writer
